Scholarships.com Interview – Listen to the expert
Last week on The Scholarship Lady Show I was able to interview Kevin Ladd of Scholarships.com. It was a great interview with tips on how to use Scholarships.com to improve your odds of finding scholarships. Kevin also announced that they will again sponsor the Resolve to Evolve Essay scholarship competition (starts in May). I asked him for tips on winning scholarships and here’s a few pieces of advice:
1. Realize that everything gets noticed. Everything. Your spelling, language, neatness, etc.
2. Your effort is evident. If you throw it together at the last minute just know that you are competing with students who spent a great deal of time perfecting their applications.
3. Be genuine. You need to stand out and using cliches or generic essay material won’t put you ahead of the competition. (Being genuine and memorable will)

During my HS senior year, I was awarded several scholarships to attend a college for Nursing. Now, as I complete my 1st semester, I am considering applying for some of the same scholarships (open to HS seniors and college undergraduates) that awarded monies to me last Spring. While these scholarships are renewable, I am finding it difficult to submit an essay that is different from the one the was sunbmitted last Spring. Yes, after one college semester, I have a new GPA and have completed new courses, but have not accomplished much more than that. How do you suggest I sell myself to a scholarship committee that will likely remember me and my essay/application from 11 months ago? Thank you for your assistance.

Completing one semester is a huge accomplishment. You can update your essay with facts about college life, the adjustments you made and how you had a successful first semester. Whether or not they will remember you from a year ago – I can’t say, but if you are eligible you should apply! By the way, if you decide not to apply for some reason, you should still send them an update and a thank you letter. Good Luck! – The Scholarship Lady
